A Beginner’s Guide to Vineyard Tastings – From Pour to Pairing

There is something magical about standing among the vines. Sunlight catching on leaves, laughter drifting through the air, and the promise of a perfectly poured glass waiting just ahead.

Visiting a vineyard isn’t only about tasing wine; it’s about slowing down, savouring the moment, and connecting to the story behind every bottle. If you’ve ever wondered what really happens during a wine tasting or how to feel confident at your first one, this guide will walk you through it. From pour to pairing.

  1. The Welcome

Most vineyard tastings begin with a warm introduction – sometimes a short chat at the counter, sometimes a guided stroll through the vines or barrel room. You’ll hear about the grapes, the harvest and maybe even the family that’s been tending the land for generations.

Etiquette tip: arrive on time, skip strong perfume (it interferes with aromas) and wear something comfortable yet chic. Think breezy linen, a soft wrap or tailored casual pieces.

2. The Tasting Flight

Here’s were the magic begins. Most tastings include five to seven small pours – starting with the whites, moving through rosés and reds, and sometimes finishing with a sweet or sparkling wine.

Take your time with each glass:

  1. Look: Notice the colour, it hints at the grape and age.
  2. Swirl: Gently – this releases the aromas
  3. Smell: Inhale. Don’t you catch fruit, spice or something earthy?
  4. Sip: Let it linger. You don’t need to identify every note. Just pay attention to what you enjoy.

There’s no „right“ way to taste wine – just your way.

3. Questions to Ask

Winemakers love curious guests – it shows genuine interest. Try asking:

  • What inspired this vintage?
  • Which wine pairs best with cozy dinners?
  • What’s your personal favourite?

You’ll walk away with stories – not just tasing notes.

4. Vineyard Etiquette

A few small touches go a long way:

  • Don’t rush – savour each pour.
  • Use the spittoon if needed, it’s perfectly normal.
  • Drink water between tastings.
  • Be kind and open-minded – every wine reflects someone’s passion.
  • Buy a bottle if one really speaks to you; it’s the best souvenir.

5. From Pour to Pairing

Before you leave, ask about food pairings or local dishes that complement your favourite bottle. Some vineyards even offer cheese boards or small bites – the perfect way to see how flavours come alive together.

Wine always tastes better when shared with good food, good views, and good company.

6. The Aftertaste

A vineyard visit isn’t about memorising notes or impressing anyone. It’s about connecting. To the landscape, the craft and the moment in your glass.

The best wines aren’t just tasted – they’re remembered.

Next time you’re planning a weekend getaway, add a vineyard to your list. Bring an open mind, a curious palate and maybe a little extra space for the bottles that capture your heart.
